Where to Get a DBA Certification?

December 29th, 2008 by Shenron

It’s always important to keep yourself updated. In the fast-paced world of the internet, new technologies are always being developed, and it’sa must for IT professionals to keep up.

DBA Certification

Certification programs are available online for different IT jobs. Certificates are given to individuals who pass the test, which signify that they are qualified and capable to perform the tasks and duties of database administration. Certification programs are given by well-known system softwares such as IBM , Microsoft and Oracle . These programs are optional for IT professionals and usually cost money, and the fees are for the training courses attached to the certification exam to help the examinees prepare for the test. With the time and money involved, are they really necessary for an IT professional’s career?

DBA Certification - Important or Not?

Database certification is a good way to test your knowledge. It will also help you identify your weaknesses and the areas that you need to improve, but it is not really a practical factor in telling if someone is capable of performing complex database administration. With the continuing changes in technology and different problems that you may encounter, there are things that can only be learned by experience.

A formalized test can be passed with just the right manuals and books. The syntax questions can be tricky, but you don’t need to memorize them as long as you have the right study tools. Syntax and its structures change all the time, so there is no reason to memorize them. The test will measure your knowledge but not exactly your skills, so the important things here are studying the concepts, fundamentals and how the database system of their organization works. There are database administrators who have notable experience but don’t have a certification. Certification programs have gotten popular only recently because of demands by companies. There are some who prefer not to spend cash on a training program they already know.

Getting a DBA Certification

Getting a DBA Certification is necessary if you want to be employable. More and more organizations are requiring IT professionals to be certified. Companies are using certification as a guide to hire employees because IT is becoming more complex due to new technologies that are constantly being developed. If you decide to take the test, you don’t have to spend money on the training program. There are self-help books that you can utilize. These books will cover test topics and sample questions to prepare you for the test. You can find information on the internet on which books to buy from IT professionals who have already taken the test

If you plan to change jobs in the future or just make sure that you will get employed, getting a certification is ideal. It will also help to keep you up to date and refresh your stock knowledge. Brick-and-Mortar Schools Versus Online Schools

Creating and maintaining a more complex website that has web applications need a level of expertise, so you will need to enroll in a comprehensive course. You have the option of enrolling in an IT school or finding an online course. Training programs such as Oracle and SQL server courses are available online. This will require a fee that will depend on the program. In online courses, lessons are sent in the form of modules. Students will interact with their trainers though emails. If you want a more interactive approach to learning, taking a seat in the classroom is much better where there are different training programs and curriculums. The key here is finding the one that suits you best.

Online Help

If you’re a beginner who wants to put up a simple website and publish their content online, there are tutorials that you can find online. The internet has a wealth of information where you can learn the fundamentals of databases. Articles about different concepts can be found online to give you an idea and point the right direction if you want to know more.

Apart from basic information, there are also online training programs. Training courses of different servers are also available online. Tools are also available in the internet. There are free softwares that you can find online to make your own website. You can even find reviews in forums and blogs where you can also ask for help and advice.

Apart from getting training to start a website, you also need information to become knowledgeable in how your database works, and you also need to train yourself in troubleshooting your own system. There are many guides and websites about programming in the internet.

After getting to know how your system works, you also need to train for maintaining your own website. If you don’t want to hire a database administrator, you need to be an IT professional. Complex websites have more than one database, and maintaining it needs a high level of expertise, so whether you to do it yourself or hire somebody else, you need to learn about databases because training is essential in building and maintaining your own website.

Even if you are not going to, learning the basics is still important so that you know how to troubleshoot your own system, and you also have to make sure that the person you hired knows what they are doing.

What is a Database Schema?

December 28th, 2008 by Shenron

Database schema refers to the layout of the database, which shows how each data is organized into structures or tables. It is also referred to as the language used by database management systems. The schema in a relational database refers to the tables, fields and also the existing relationship between the fields and tables. Schemas are stored in a data dictionary, and although it is usually in database language, it is considered as the graphic model of a database . Simply put, it is the representation of the database. Data dictionary, on the other hand, is the storage for the data input by various users. It can handle large quantities of information from multiple sources.

Database Schema Example

Understanding Database Schema

Another definition of a database schema is that it refers to the characteristics of an input. An example is the number of characters in a string for a field name or password, and this is considered a database schema. This includes the kind of characters allowed for the field name or password. It also talks about the relationship between the tables that are within a certain database. Schema is the term used when talking about the existing templates, such as the strings or characters that are required when adding information.

Database schema is also known as a repository of tables that are already defined along with their relationship with one another. Large numbers of object-oriented classes can be seen in a schema. Data types, assertions, and procedures that are stored can be included in a schema.

Levels of Database Schema and Its Functions

Database is simple enough to understand. The creation of it is another matter. There are different levels of a database schema that is required in creating a database. Each level represents different functions, and these are the conceptual schema, logical schema, and physical schema. Conceptual schema shows the concepts of the information placed in tables as well as their relationships. This usually talks about the semantics of a group. Conceptual schema refers to important matters related to the group or organization, its characteristics as well as their association with one another which is considered to be significant. The conceptual schema also allows a database to inherit a characteristic from another database. The meaning of inheritance leans more on object oriented terminology.

Logical schema, on the other hand, refers to the model of the data that talk about a specific problem in a domain that is a part of a database. It also refers to tables and columns that are in relation to one another, XML tags and classes that are object-oriented.

There is still a difference between the conceptual and physical schema. Once the logical schema is done, the next step, which is also the last step in creating a database, is the physical schema.

Physical schema refers to the storage of data into disk drives that can be used in a company whose computers are all in a network which is located within one place and yet still connected to another company in another area. Physical schema simply refers to how a series of networked computers are related to another network, which may be found in another area or possibly in another country.

What is a Database?

December 19th, 2008 by Shenron

Have you ever wondered how your files, documents and other important data are always available when you input a certain command on your computer to access them? Who organizes them in such a way that whatever you need at any given time is readily available with literally just one click ?

The advancement of the computer technology has brought many different benefits to users, whether individual or a network of multiple users. Data storage is one of those benefits. What used to be a working filing practice before has now become obsolete, thanks to the onset of the Computer Age and its technological benefits.

Traditional Paper Database

Electronic Data Storage

A database is like your electronic file storage where you can input everything that you want to remember or document for future referencing and where the output is what exactly you put in. In a manner of speaking, your database holds all the documents, reports and other important details that are significant for your work or your personal needs. Think of it as your e-filing cabinet.

What this does for you is to keep all the important information you will be needing for your future work transactions, for example, until such time when you will need to access them, minus the hassles of all the paperwork and manual filing.

This type of electronic data storage is especially helpful for users who are accessing the same data from a network of computers. This setup is usually found in offices or in the workplace. Users in the same network may now get hold of all the same information simultaneously.

A Good Working Database System

Since their inception, database systems have been providing computer users with all the data filing techniques to help get everything organized and more easily accessible. In order to have a really good working database system though, you will be needing a good computer software that will program your hard drive to help it organize your files accordingly as per your specifications.

Deciding what kind of software or program you will be requiring for your database needs should be done based on your needs. For example, if you only want a single data storage, the program you need won’t be as elaborate as one that you would want to get if you were looking at multiple data storage.

With a multiple data storage system, you can easily link up all your information that are relevant to one another so that, when you click on one item, you will not need to open another program in order to see all the relevant information about what you’re looking at.

In simple terms, a single database system is great for individual needs such as organizing files for the home, documenting doctor’s or dentist’s visits, creating a daily schedule to keep track of everything on your To-Do list, remembering special occasions and such.

In both multiple and single data storage needs, there are appropriate programs that you can incorporate in your computer system to help you get organized.

Installing your first Wordpress script

December 9th, 2008 by Shenron

Now that we’ve created the database and added an user to it, we can actually get going and install the script ( wordpress ).

Wordpress Logo

Understanding the basics

Right, first of all we will explain the basic format of a database and username, as this is confusing to a lot of newbies, it took me a while to get used to it.

useraccount_databasename

Your hosting account username ALWAYS comes before the databasename followed by the underscore “_” to avoid confusion you could always call the name the database the same as your account name so say your hosting account name was “JonDoe” you would put JonDoe, so it would show as JonDoe_JonDoe

useraccount_databaseuser

The database username is slightly different as the database user is what your script uses to add entries or tables into the database, or even to query the database and as with the database name your hosting account username always comes first followed by the “_” underscore.

Again for ease of use you could name the database user the same as your hosting account name however we will call it “dbadmin” so you can tell them appart. So it would be typed as JonDoe_dbadmin

Table Prefixes

Some scripts use a table prefix within the database itself for example SMF uses the prefix smf_ some scripts will allow you to change this prefix however you don’t really need to, if it has one preset then just leave it as is. Prefixes also help the user identify which entries belong to which script or installation.

Database Hostname

This is simply the hostname used to connect to whatever database your using in 99% of cases it will be localhost and a lot of scripts nowadays will already have this set but it can always be changed to whatever the hostname is.

Installation

Right now that we understand the basic format of the database name and username we can begin to install the script, for this tutorial we will be installing wordpress as it’s probably one of the most used scripts which is also by far the easiest to install but for a complete novice understanding what to put in for the database related fields can be daunting.

Step 1 : Creating Config File

If you want wordpress to create the config file itself then you can click this and if it works you will be taken to the next step however if not you will need to make a simple change to your permissions. Log into cpanel then click file manager, next navigate to the folder wordpress is in which will be in your public_html folder(probably just called wordpress) and then select it it and click change permissions on the panel at the top and set to 777. Now go back to the wordpress install script and try creating the config file again, if you’ve uploaded wp to the public_html folder then simply follow the above process but this time select your public_html folder.

Step 2 : Configuration

As we have explained the database format to you earlier in this tutorial you should now have a much better understanding of what to enter.

Database Name : useraccount_databasename

Username : useraccount_databaseuser

Password : password goes here (the one you generated for the database user in our previous tutorial )

Database Host : localhost

Table Prefix : wp_ (no need to change this)

Then simply hit submit .

Step 3 : Admin Setup

This is pretty straightforward really and it doesn’t need much explaining as it’s self explanatory, just enter your blog name, email and bobs your uncle. Don’t forget to keep your admin password somewhere safe as it is generated by the installation script but you can easily change it once you log in to something more memorable.

Congratulations!

Well done you just installed your first script, not that hard is it?

Most scripts follow the same format for the database side of things during installation so for future reference you can use the following as a guide although some scripts may not always follow this format.

Create your first Mysql database

December 9th, 2008 by Shenron

Installing a script (like wordpress for example) can seem a daunting task to newbies, with all those different fields you have to fill in and to which you don’t have a clue about.

Don’t fret, we will guide you through the process of creating a new database and installing that script.

Step 1

This much you should have already figured out by now, log into cpanel and select MySQL Databases there are other types of databases but we dont need those for now.

Logo Mysql / Sun

Корак 2

You should see a text area which says above it “Create New Database” yup you guessed it you put the name of the database in here and click create. Keep it simple as chances are you will have to enter it into your script at somepoint, say for example your installing vbulletin, just call it something like forum . Easy peasy so far huh?

Step 3

This is where it starts to get more complicated. Go back to the previous page and then scroll down and you should see an option further down the page which says “Add new User” and like naming the database itself keep the username simple. Then create a password, for extra security it’s probably best if you generate one but you should note this down using notepad or something as you will more than likely need to enter it  uring your script installation after then you probably wont need it again but you can always retreive it from your scripts config file.

Step 4

Now we hit the back button again and this time we need to add the user to the database lets say you named it forum. Scroll down the page where you should see the option “Add user to Database” , now provided you haven’t created any other databases you shouldn’t have to select the database to add the user to, or vice versa however if you have simply select your database and user you just created from the drop down and click add.

Step 5

Were almost there chaps. Now you will have to give your database username whatever privileges you want it o have, this is more for the advanced user who wants extra security but most of you wont really need to configure these privelages so just click the ALL PRIVILEGES check box and then click make changes.

Congratulations!

You’ve just created your first database now navigate on to the next part of our tutorial to find out how to install your first script.
